Travel Diaries: Pisa

A quick stop in Pisa! After our two days in Cinque Terre we took the train back to Pisa where we were going to catch our flight to Paris. Lucky for us, we had the entire morning to check out this iconic site. While it was once again a steamy day with lots of walking we were able to check our luggage at the train station and make the mile walk to the Field of Miracles, which boast the leaning tower of Pisa, a Baptistry, and the accompanying Cathedral.
The tower itself was built in 3 stages over the course of 200 years. After the 1st layer was built, the tower began to sink because it was built on marshy land. Continuing to build, even so, is sunk some more. The only way to even it out a bit and keep the structure sound was by sucking out tons of muck from the opposite side.
 Duh. Had to do it.
